You want more opens, more clicks, and more business from your email marketing. So how do you get those results you’re looking for? Well, the secret to a highly responsive email list is actually pretty simple.

Start with people who are interested in hearing from you. When you have consent to email the people you’re trying to reach you can expect better overall results from your email campaigns. Why is consent so important? Well, consider this. About 90% of all email traffic is spam. This means that internet service providers or ISP’s are hard at work keeping those unwanted messages out of the users email inbox. Therefore, protecting the user from email messages they don’t want to receive.

After all, spam is about consent not contact. Even if you have the greatest email content in the world if the person receiving it didn’t give consent first it’s likely to cause some problems. Like your email getting marked as spam by the receiver.

This can have a negative effect on your ability to deliver to the inbox and of course the results you can expect from email marketing. But when you start with consent the receiver is likely to engage with your emails in ways that signals to the ISP that your email is welcomed and useful to the user.

So, as you look to build and maintain a highly responsive email list keep the following things in mind:

Never buy or rent a list of email addresses. The reason is simple. You don’t have explicit consent to email these people and it’s likely that if your email does make it to their inbox they’ll mark you email as spam. These complaints won’t help you in the long run.

Always look to build a permission based email list. Allow people to raise their hands and say, “Yes, I’d like to receive emails from you.” This consent to receive email is the first step to building a responsive email list that helps grow your business.

Regularly maintain your list for best results. If you want to keep your car running at its best you need to bring it in for regular maintenance. The same goes for your email list. When you regularly inspect and make adjustments to your email list you’ll continue to get great results.
